Vitamin K
We know it’s not always obvious where your vitamins are coming from and what wondrous things they do for our bodies. We know they’re good, but in what ways? And what do I need to eat to benefit from them?
Don’t worry. By following along with us, we’ll help to demystify the story of each vitamin, helping you on your path to a more nutritious, vitamin-rich diet with Spicewell.
Let’s look at Vitamin K, ‘k?!
What Is Vitamin K?
At least one quarter of the American population isn’t reaching an adequate intake of vitamin K (along with A, C, D and E for that matter). Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin that helps your body make the proteins it needs for blood clotting, a process that ensures you don’t bleed continuously when you have a cut.
Vitamin K also enables proteins to produce healthy bone tissue by directing calcium to the bones and teeth — a vital step in bone building.
Studies have established links between low vitamin K intake and fracture risk, low bone mass and osteoporosis, a condition characterized by porous, fragile bones, primarily affecting women. In one study, both men and women who consumed less than the recommended amount of vitamin K per day were found to be more likely to break a hip!
It’s rare to have a short-term deficiency in vitamin K, but a suboptimal intake can impair your health over time, impairing the blood's ability to clot, weakening your bones and increasing your risk of heart disease.
The good news is, at Spicewell we ensure our New Salt and Pepper products have some of the vitamin K you need, along with all the other vitamins and minerals that are essential to maintain a healthy, balanced diet. All you have to do is season your food, and over time with daily use, we’ll help fill the vitamin gaps in your lifestyle.
Oh, and did we mention: our salt contains 30 percent less sodium than regular salt, so we got your heart covered too!
